Meet the SAbyNA Guidance Platform

What is the SAbyNA Guidance Platform?

The SAbyNA Guidance Platform is an overarching integrative and interactive web-based guideline service that gives the industry support towards the development of safer nanoforms (NFs) and safer nano-enabled products (NEPs), safer nano processes over the whole life cycle, with advanced functionalities tailored to two industrial sectors: Paints and 3D Printing.

What the SAbyNA Guidance Platform
can do for me?

Guide producers of nanomaterials

Guide producers of nanomaterials, manufacturers of nano-enabled products as well as consultancy companies through the development of safer nanoproducts

Integrate hazard

Integrate hazard, exposure, functionality, sustainability and costs assessment along the whole life cycle of the nano-enabled product following a holistic perspective

Assist the user with the use of tools

Help the user to navigate on the use of risk assessment tools, nano-specific databases and on the application of testing strategies such as Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment and Standard Operating Procedures for experimental testing

Steer the innovation

Steer the innovation towards safe and sustainable new nanoforms, nano-enabled products and related processes, by helping the manufacturers to implement the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles recently adopted by the European Commission in the SSbD Framework

The point of view of the developer

Ralph Vanhauten (THINKWORKS- Developer of the SAbyNA Platform) - (co-owner).
Using the SAbyNA online Guidance Platform will help a company to identify potential risks related to the application of nanomaterials along the life cycle and support risk mitigation by offering both material and process related safe(r) by design (SbD) interventions. The platform offers a variety of simple to more advanced functionalities and resources to support your quest for safe(r) production and/or usage of nanomaterials while still exploiting their unique functional properties. The platform will encourage companies to provide information on their potential SbD scenario like nanoforms, products and materials as well as in identifying exposure scenarios along the life cycle in a highly organised way. Basic information on the initial nanoform and likely emission and/or exposure routes are used to screen for any known hazards and provide early SbD suggestions. Based on the screening outcomes, a detailed assessment may be suggested. At this advanced stage, the tool offers functionalities to indicate and assess exposure scenarios and to apply the SAbyNA SbD hazard testing strategy on the exposure relevant forms. Both exposure and hazard outcomes may trigger the need for a SbD intervention and potential SbD strategies will be provided.

The point of view of the final user

Davide Lotti (LATI- INDUSTRIA TERMOPLASTICI SPA- Italy)
Regulatory and Analysis Specialist/R&D Dept. The SAbyNA Platform opens the possibility for industries to identify possible hazard and/or exposure hotspots of NEPs at the beginning of the product manufacturing stage. In this way, the manufacturers can select ad hoc SbD interventions to increase the safety of products and/or processes at the early stage of product development. The Platform will help us to anticipate safety considerations already in the design phase, thus reducing costs related to i) the development of products whose market may be restricted by customer concerns/ safety regulations or ii) unnecessary investment to redesign the manufacturing facilities to decrease NF releases.
